EARTHSCAPES
1994-2004 Selected Works
Making art about the changing environment required a re-examination of my connection to Western culture and the use of commercially-produced art materials. Gradually I began collecting and covering works with native soils of the Great Basin in lieu of paint. Weaving grasses and coyote willows into frames and compositional elements seemed natural and in balance with the ecosystem. These works brought me closer to the earth and to the need to protect open space for future generations. I drew inspiration from Tibetan Buddhist sand painting and Native American basket-making.
