ENDANGERED SPACES

2005-2008, Selected Works

The impact of urbanization and climate change on the environment affected the evolution of my work.  Plastic bags, the wind-driven discards of the modern era, were literally everywhere from population centers spreading outward to the remotest corners of the Great Basin.  I began collecting them in earnest and upcycling them into my work.  Amazingly, it would take until 2016 for California to ban single-use plastic bags, and in Nevada will not be banned until 2022.  The need for greater detail and color accuracy pushed the use of acrylic paint.  The resulting realism of this series rests on layers of acrylic paint over soil and plastic bags.
